question:plan to represent myself in court and consider myself extremely versatile so I should be able to win it. However, if you could give me one piece of advice, what would it be?

answer:First, I will begin by letting Abraham Lincoln answer your question and then I will take a stab at it. Lincoln was a very famous and skillful lawyer. Lincoln wrote that a man who “represents himself in court has a fool for a client.” Now I will add my own admonitions. You may understand your favorite sport very well, but not necessarily be able to play it. When you as a lay person walk into a courtroom against a lawyer, it will be like you being matched against an NBA player in a game of basketball. Even if the player opposite you is one of the worst ranked players in the league, the outcome will still be certain. You will lose. And that is the most likely fate that awaits you in a courtroom. I have spent the last 4 decades of my life in courtrooms. I have watched the performance and the results in countless cases involving people representing themselves. A few of them have done astonishingly well. But only a few. The rest were sad failures. Most of the failures were going to lose anyway. They just didn’t have the facts or the law on their side - but they didn’t know it. Many losers could have had much better outcomes if they had legal representation. Legal representation could have allowed quite a few of the losers to salvage something better that an outright loss. That’s because a lawyer would have been able to negotiate something better for them. There is no better substitute in a courtroom for putting the skill, experience and analytical ability on your side that only a lawyer can bring to the handling of your case.
